Hey there, fellow K-beauty enthusiasts! For today’s K-beauty Wednesdays, I’ll be sharing with you one of Althea’s newest products! Althea’s been on a roll these past few weeks and I can barely breathe, gurrrrl! The thing is, there’s more to come, so hold tight as we welcome 2019!
Before I get started, how’s your holiday going so far? How did you celebrate Christmas? I had a wonderful time with my family, but I’ve been down with a cold since yesterday, so that sucks. I’m back to work now, too. Who’s with me?! 🙋♀️
A new Althea box arrived a couple of weeks ago and it contained two of their newest releases.
One is their first ever collaboration with a celebrity and it’s called Titi Kamal x Althea Stay Fresh Body Sparkling Mist. The other one is their serum cleanser, which is featured in today’s blog.
Last month, Althea made their followers guess what their upcoming product was.
It was later revealed as Pore Purifying Serum Cleanser!
PhP 430 / 150ml
Product Description: Combine the powers of a cleanser and serum with Althea’s Pore Purifying Serum Cleanser! This beauty superhero whisks away makeup, dirt, and oil with mint extracts while ensuring the skin stays cool and hydrated throughout thanks to a dual moisture cell system that envelopes the skin in a serum-like formula. It prevents the skin from drying out and effectively minimizes enlarged pores, keeping it smooth to the touch. This product also helps to balance the pH levels of the skin to keep it working in tip-top shape! Best of all, it’s gentle on the face and suitable even for those of us with sensitive skins.
- Mint leaf extract – Cools down the skin and soothes irritations
- Jojoba seed oil – Deeply moisturizes any dryness without feeling heavy
- Tea tree leaf extract – Has antibacterial properties that purify the skin

What’s a serum cleanser?
A serum cleanser, as the name suggests, is a combination of two essential skin care products: a serum that hydrates skin and a cleanser that frees skin from dirt.
Serum keeps skin moisturized without making the skin too heavy, sticky, or thick. It has thin consistency, unlike rich cream moisturizers. So while this product cleanses our skin, it also retains and locks in moisture keeping the skin from getting dried out. Thanks to the Dual Moisture Cell System!
The first serum cleanser that I tried was the Cathy Doll Acne Solution Serum + Foam Cleanser. This one, though, is more like a regular foam cleanser. It lathers up as it gets in contact with water, but it doesn’t get as foamy. It has a smoother texture, too.
A very straight-to-the-point packaging
Althea’s Exclusives products are known for their simple and minimalist packaging, and this product is a very good example for it. It is housed in a translucent blue bottle with a simple white cap. I think the blue color of the bottle represents water. 💦
I think, though, that while it looks gorgeous, it’s a bit impractical. I guess it would really have been better if it had a pump instead. Because of this, I decided to finally use my empty travel bottle from Substance Laser & Skin Care! It’s a lot more convenient with the pump and I can also take it with me when I travel.
The labels are mostly written in Korean, so it’ll be a struggle for non-Korean language speakers. I do hope they’ll include English translations next time!
Now here’s what I’m struggling with… Because this cleanser has Jojoba oil, the oil seeps in through the gaps of the cap and leaves the bottle slippery and oily, too, particularly when the bottle is tipped over. For me, this is a bit of a hassle especially when travelling. I hope they could find a way to improve the packaging to avoid any inconvenience.
So if you have an extra pump or an extra bottle like I do, I suggest that you use that instead.
So, what’s the product like?
Because of the blue packaging, I initially thought the product would be a clear blue color as well. It turned out that it’s a lot like water, it’s just that this is a bit oily and more slippery.
I really love the scent! It’s super gentle and relaxing; and has a hint of mint.
I was confused at first, I wasn’t sure how it was properly used. I thought perhaps like a makeup remover before washing the face? Or a cleanser that is used after soaking the face? I ended up doing them both. 😜😅
What does it do?
This product does not foam up, it’s simply like oil being applied on the face — only it’s thinner than the usual oil. I just massage my face with it for a few seconds, then I rinse it with water. Surprisingly, the product does not make my face greasy at all! It is so thin that it gets washed off with water, not leaving any trace of oil residue behind. It just makes my skin feel super fresh, healthy, and moisturized!
According to the Althea website, it has a pH balance of 5.6 to 6.5 that makes our skin healthy. The jojoba seed oil does not only moisturize the skin; it also melts away any makeup residue freeing our skin from breakouts or irritations. With its mint extracts, the Pore Purifying Serum Cleanser can relax our tired and enlarged pores, so they’ll appear smaller after wash.
Though it is good for all skin types, I think this will go perfectly on combination to dry skin.
What do I think about the product?
Because I’m used to the traditional foam cleansers, it took me a while before I got used to this serum cleanser. I’m still not sure, though, if I do need my Althea Contour Cleanser to further cleanse my face! But I guess that would be unnecessary since my skin does look and feel healthier and cleaner afterwards.
After days of using it as a facial wash, I can tell that it never causes my skin any breakouts. I also experienced NO signs of irritation, so that’s a major plus! I love how it leaves my skin fresh and healthy, without making it feel too dry and tight. ❤
Now, let’s see if it does have the power to remove makeup.
Below are swatches of different makeup items, mostly waterproof and long-wearing. From left to right: Maybelline Super Stay Foundation (set with Coty Airspun Loose Powder and Karadium Moisture Collagen Two-Way Cake), Clio Kill Cover Pro Artist Liquid Concealer (also set with Coty and Karadium), Careline Graph Ink Liner, L’Oreal Lash Paradise mascara, Ellana x Project Vanity Life Proof Brow Gel, Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Pencil Liner, Karadium Oh My Lips, Clio Silkuid Lip, Ellana Minerals Lip in Luxx, Maybelline Super Stay Liquid Lipstick, and L’Oreal Infallible ProMatte Liquid Lipstick.
First, I’ll try removing half of the makeup with a cotton pad.
As you can see in the GIF, it was able to remove the make up completely. Though it took me exactly 1 minute and 39 seconds, at least it did not leave much residue behind.
This time, I tried removing the rest of the makeup with my fingers alone. The Pore Purifying Serum Cleanser did do its job, but I’m not gonna lie, it took me much longer than with a cotton pad. It took me exactly 2 minutes and 15 seconds, plus an extra few seconds rinsing it with water. I also missed one tiny part, so there’s a bit of the L’Oreal Infallible ProMatte Liquid Lipstick left.
So far so good. Over all, I’m really satisfied with the Althea Pore Purifying Serum Cleanser. It’s a serum + makeup remover + cleanser in one! Well, minus the medyo greasy na bottle. hehe!
If I’m only wearing light makeup, I’ll definitely use it alone. But if I have a full on heavy makeup, I’ll use a separate makeup remover first, like my new favorite, Banila co. Clean It Zero.
